Benefits of Hiking in Addiction Treatment
Although the premise of addiction treatment for drugs or alcohol may seem stressful or overwhelming at times, there are many aspects of the addiction recovery process that will be new and exciting. However, to truly make the most out of your time in treatment, you may need to start a detox program. The reason for this is that when you develop an addiction to drugs or alcohol, your body will go into somewhat of a tailspin in the first few hours from the time that you last consume your substance of choice. On average, detox usually lasts approximately seven days. However, it may last longer depending on the severity of your addiction. After that point, you will be in a better place to focus on the steps you need to take to work through your sobriety, like finding hiking in addiction treatment.
A critical decision that you will need to make is whether you will commit to an inpatient or an outpatient treatment plan. There are many things that you should consider as you are making this decision. For example, if you’re working or going to school, an inpatient program would be out of the question. This is because an inpatient program requires that you live on the campus of your treatment facility for a set period. However, many clients require this type of structure to keep themselves focused on what they need to do to be able to overcome their addiction.
Regardless of whether you decide to commit to an inpatient or an outpatient program, you will need to participate in different forms of therapy that will help you identify the root cause of your addiction. In many cases, the root cause of your addiction is experiencing some form of trauma during your life. Whether this trauma occurred during your adulthood or in your childhood, if this trauma wasn’t addressed with proper psychological care, then an event like this may have triggered your addiction.
One of the primary forms of therapy that you will experience when you’re in treatment is group therapy. In many ways, group therapy is very similar to Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. The reason for this is that during group therapy sessions, you will have the opportunity to share about different events or experiences and, in turn, listen to what others have to say about the topic that is at hand. You may notice that other people have had similar experiences as what you have had, which could lead you to build and develop your own system of support.
Another unique form of therapy that you will experience is family therapy. If your addiction negatively impacts your relationship, family therapy can provide you with the tools you need to begin to put these relationships back together. It’s important to remember that this form of treatment will only occur when you come to a place in your treatment where you feel ready for it.
Once you complete rehab therapy during addiction recovery, finding hiking in addiction treatment can give you the release you need to enjoy a sober life. The new experience with hiking can be a unique added benefit in your life which is always something that you need both during the time that you’re in treatment and long after.
Why Spending Time in Nature Is Great for Sobriety
Spending time in nature is something that is always encouraged for many reasons. First and foremost, spending time in nature can completely change your attitude. Feeling the warm sun or simply listening to the peace and calm that comes with it can help you feel better about things that may have been stressing you out.
Another great thing about spending more time outside is that it provides you with an excellent opportunity to spend more time with your family and loved ones in a neutral setting. This may be precisely what you need in the early stages of you and your family putting the relationship that you once had back together. Keep in mind that you don’t even have to spend time talking about the struggles that you have had. Instead, you can focus on building new memories and having new experiences that will help you to develop a stronger relationship.
Exercise Promotes Building Healthy New Habits
There are several reasons why you should always consciously incorporate exercise and other healthy habits into your life, especially when you are in the early stages of your addiction recovery journey. Here are a few reasons why it’s recommended that you exercise during and after the time that you’re in addiction treatment:
Stress release
One of the leading benefits of exercise is that it naturally relieves your stress. There is a common misconception that just because you went through an addiction treatment program, you will never feel an ounce of stress again because all of your focus was coming from your addiction. The reality is that you can handle stress and anxiety at any point in your life, and knowing how to deal with that is critical. When you have something like exercise to look forward to or start your day off, you are less likely to fall into temptation or give in to your stress. You may even come to find that you feel substantially less stressed or anxious by the end of your workout than when you began.
A healthy routine
When you were in active addiction, you likely got caught in the rhythm of unhealthy routines and habits. For instance, if you were suffering from an addiction to alcohol, you may have lived for the moment that you left the office every day so that you could go and drink. Exercise can refocus you and give you something new to look forward to, which can help to keep you focused on your overall goals.
